magicJack, it really works

I just bought magicJack at bestbuy and it works great. What is it? magicJack is a small usb dongle with a phone jack that allows you to make unlimited local and long distance calls through the net. I literally plugged it in and ten minutes later, I had a phone number and I was able to make and receive calls through a regular wireless phone. How much? 40 bucks covers the usb dongle and a year of service, every year after that is only 20 bucks. Yeah, 20 bucks per year for unlimited calls. Very little delay, very good sound quality, and so far it's very robust. Yes, it must be connected to a pc to work, but I have a media center running 24/7 so that works for me.

I tried Skype but you have to jump through various hoops and buy specialized third party hardware plus pay for a phone number & pay for outgoing calls. The hardware to use a stand alone phone is expensive with poor usability and call quality (from reviews of devices I researched).

Very cool, now we can keep in touch with the kids when they get home. The get home at 2:30 and 3:40, way before us so we can make sure they're home ok.
