Biking with my son

I've been going biking on the off road trail with my son and we've been having a lot of fun. Today was particularly interesting. We changed things up and went straight to the "medium" difficulty trail and little Alex took point. We were going at a pretty good pace and doing well, although I noticed mijo was getting bounced around on some of the rougher parts of the trail, he was handling it great.... until we took one particularly challenging spot with a couple of sharp turns around two trees. He was going a little fast, and I'd seen him tackle the same spot before so I wasn't too worried but this time he missed the final turn and went handlebars first into a tree. It was a jarring stop but not damaging and we had a good laugh.

We went through the rest of that trail without a hitch, and he even took the lead on the more advanced trail. After the regular trails we took on uncharted territory. The new trail started with an ominous drop, but after some talk lil Alex decided he'd take the lead. Well, he rode up to the trail and stopped abrubtly, the trail took a sharp drop at the entrance and we decided it would be best if mijo walked his bike down the start(which he did with some difficulty). I decided I could ride down if I just nosed over the entrance, and so tried to maneuver my way down the drop, but not 5 feet in, I lost control and fell to the side as my bike tumbled to a stop halfway down the trail. I looked over to see my boy avert his eyes to spare my dignity :). We had a good laugh and soldiered on.

The trail continued on an upward pace and we had to switch to low gears to get up the slopes but we managed up the first pretty well. I guess little Alex wasn't on the lowest gear because after the hill, he didn't quite manage the second and fell off his bike as he struggle to turn and climb up the Mesquite straddled trail. He got a little scraped but was not discouraged. I eyed his knee and aside from a little white where he scraped a branch he was just fine. We snaked through the brush and cactus on the rest of the trail and ended up by a pool of water flanked by some rough terrain and tall mounds where bikers kenevil'ed their up and down ridiculous verticals. We stared down the pool when suddenly something popped out of the water. I didn't see what it was, and I just missed it as it happened again, but we rode out soon after.

We had a blast out on the trail today and I know we'll go back for more. I love my daughter Keila, but I can't say how awesome it is to raise a son - hope we continue to be buds as he turns 12 and more...
